　　饲养狗马等动物，以纯种为贵。‘纯种’英文叫thoroughbred，作形容词或动词都可以，例如：The thoroughbred（或thoroughbred horse）won the race。引申其义，有教养的人、性能卓越的东西，也可称为thoroughbred，例如：(1) Her boyfriend is a real thoroughbred; he will make a good husband（她的男朋友很有教养，会是个好丈夫）。(2) Tom is always showing off his thoroughbred sports car（汤姆经常夸示他那辆名贵跑车）。杂种的动物，则叫mongrel，例如：I got my mongrel（或mongrel dog）from the animal shelter（我从动物庇护所领养了这只杂种狗）。纯种动物一般都有血统纪录，这‘血统’或‘纪录’叫pedigree，例如：This horse has a long pedigree（这匹马有很长的血统纪录）。A pedigree(d) dog/horse即‘有血统纪录的狗/马’。杰克问姬儿：Do you intend to show him?这等于Do you intend to enter him in a dog show?
