一、课文疑难详解
1 Alone now, the widow reads considerably.
【英文释义】The widow now lives alone and, therefore, reads much because she has much time for herself.
considerably: adv. much; a great deal 相当地 
e.g. We have a considerably smaller house than the previous one. 我们的房子比以前的那个小得多。

2 She used to underline favorite passages to share with her husband.
【英文释义】In the past she often drew lines under passages she liked best so that she could read them together with her husband.
underline: vt.
1) draw a line under 在下面划线 
e.g. We underlined titles of books.我们在书名下划线。
2) give added attention to, so as to show importance 强调,使突 出 
e.g. The rice crisis underlined the problem that the government faces.大 米危机使政府面临的问题更加突出。
share with: give part of what you have to sb. 分享
e.g. I share a room with other two students.我和另外两个学生一起用一个房间。

3 I experience again the deepfelt wish to be part of a married couple, to sit by the fire in winter with the man who is my husband.
【英文释义】Again I deeply feel the strong desire to be part of a married couple, to sit by the fire in winter with the man who is my husband.
experience: vt. feel, live through感到,体验 
e.g. a. After experiencing so many defeats, victory is so sweet.经历了那么多次失败以
后,胜利就是显得如此甜密。
     b. He experienced that heartbroken sadness when hi s father died.当父亲去世时,他感到了那种心碎的悲伤。

4 So intense is this wish that if I write the word husband on a piece of paper, my
eyes fill with tears.
【英文释义】This wish is so intense that if I write the word “husband” on a piece of paper, my eyes fill with tears.
intense: a.very great; very strong 强烈的
e.g. I cannot stand the intense pressure. 我无法忍受这儿的巨大压力。
fill with: (cause to) become full of使充满
e.g. They filled my bag with all kinds of presents.他们在我的包里装满
了各种各样的礼物。

5 We begin with a worn wedding album.
【英文释义】Let us begin our story with a worn wedding album.
begin with: start (something) with (something) 从……开始 
e.g.
a. We will begin this term with an English class.这个学期的第一节课将是英语课。
b. Let's begin our dream with a detailed plan.让我们订一个详细的计划来开始我 们的梦想吧。

6 In the first picture, the bride and groom are facing, with uncertain smiles, a church filled with relatives and friends.
【英文释义】In the first picture, the bride and groom with uncertain smiles are facing a church crowded with relatives and friends.filling with relatives and friends修饰a church。

7 They walked to the back of the church and stood at the door as their guests filed past.
【英文释义】They walked to the back of the church and stood at the door as their
guests walked by them in a line.
file:
1) vi. walk on behind the other一个接一个地走  e.g. The guests filed into their places.客人们鱼贯就座。
2) vt. put away (paper, etc.) in order归档 e.g. Please file those letters. 请把那些信件档。 
3) n. a store of paper on one subject保存的文件 e.g. We have a file on every known criminal.我们对每个已知的罪犯都有档案。

8 With money loaned by the grooms brother, they could afford a honeymoon at a state-park lodge.
【英文释义】Because they borrowed some money from the grooms brother, they were able to have a honeymoon at a state-park lodge. 
loan:
1) vt. lend 借 e.g. He loaned me a dictionary.他借给我一本字 典。
2) n. quantity of money loaned 贷款;借出的钱 
e.g. May I have a loan of your dictionary?我能借用一下你的字典吗?

9 Sitting before a great oak fire, they recalled the events of the day, especially the strange message conveyed by Aunt Esther Gubbins.
【英文释义】Sitting in front of a great oak fire, they reviewed what had happened on the day of their wedding, especially wondering about the meaning of Aunt Esther Gubbins words.
recall: vt. remember回忆,回想
e.g. a. I recall seeing a map on his wall.我记得曾在他墙上见过一张地图。
     b. I dont recall your name but I recognize your face.我不记得你的名字,但认得你的脸。

10“Isn't she your aunt?” the husband responded.
【英文释义】“Isn't she your aunt?” the husband answered. 
respond: vi. (to) answer回答,反应 
e.g. The student responded negatively to the question.这个学生对这个问题作出了否
定的回答。

11 Had she come to the wrong church or at the wrong time, mistaking them for another couple?
【英文释义】Had she come to the wrong church or at the wrong time, thinking wron gly that they were the couple that she knew and was looking for?
mistake for: think wrongly that someone or something is someone or something else错把……当作了…… e.g. The twins are so alike, I mistook the elder brother for the other.这两个双胞胎很相像,我把哥哥错当成了另一个。


12Peculiarly, neither ever asked “Whose job is this?” or asserted “That is not
my responsibility!”
【英文释义】Strangely, neither the husband nor the wife asked “Whose job is this?” or declared forcefully “That is not my responsibility!”
peculiarly: ad. 
1) especially特别地;特殊地 
 e.g. This topic is peculiarly difficult to write about. 这个题目特别难写。
2) strangely奇怪地;奇异地
e.g. There is something peculiar about him. 他有点古怪。
assert: vt. declare forcefully 断言, 声称 
e.g. I had to assert myself in the meeting in order to ensure acquisition of the new book. 我在会上不得不坚持自己观点以保证得到那本新书。

13And she, restraining the desire to complain about housework, would respond, “Husband, I am glad!”
【英文释义】And the wife controlling herself not to complain about the housework , would reply,“Husband, I am glad!”
restrain: vt. prevent from doing something; hold back 抑制, 制止
e.g. She tried with all her might to restrain her resentment. 她努力抑制住自己
的怨恨。

14Occasionally, usually around their anniversary, they would bring up the old curiosity regarding Aunt Esther Gubbins.
【英文释义】Sometimes, usually around their wedding anniversary, they would mention Aunt Esther Gubbins, whom they were still curious about.
bring up: mention or introduce (a subject)提起 
e.g. a. He accepted the task without bringing up his difficulties.他没有提他的困难就接
受了这项任务。
     b. I didnt bring up her name to avoid making him sad.我没有提她的名字,为的是
不使他伤心。

15Widowed now, the wife wonders what she would save from their old home if it were
to catch fire.
【英文释义】As now her husband has died, she wonders what she would save from their old house if it were on fire.
save from: keep (something or someone) from (danger, being destroyed, etc.); make safe from danger or being destroyed 挽救
e.g. A police officer saved the tourist from being cheated. 一位警官使旅游者免 于受骗。

16 Anyway, its time to stop wondering whether she came from heaven or a nearly town.
【英文释义】In any case, we should stop being curious about who the old woman was and where she came from.

What matters is this: whoever she was, Aunt Esther Gubbins was right.
【英文释义】What is important is that no matter who she was, Aunt Esther Gubbins was right.
matter: vi. be important 有关系, 要紧
e.g. But this does not matter, for, as he has often remarked, one is never too old to learn. 然而这没有关系,因为正如他一向所说的,人要活到老学到老。
whoever: no matter who 无论谁 
e.g. Whoever comes will be welcomed. 无论谁来都会受到欢迎。
