The relation of language and mind has interested philosophers for many centuries. (61) The Greeks assumed that the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought, which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse language could be.
Only recently did linguists begin the serious study of languages that were very different from their own. Two anthropologist-linguists, Franz Boas and Edward Sapir, were pioneers in describing many native languages of North and South America during the first half of the twentieth century. (62) We are obliged to them because some of these languages have since vanished, as the peoples who spoke them died out or became assimilated and lost their native languages. Other linguists in the earlier part of this century, however, who were less eager to deal with bizarre(古怪的) data from "exotic(外来的)" language, were not always so grateful. (63) The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data. Native American languages are indeed different, so much so in fact that Navajo could be used by the US military as a code during World War II to send secret messages.
Sapir's pupil, Benjamin Lee Whorf, continued the study of American Indian languages. (64) Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society. He reasoned that because it is easier to formulate certain concepts and not others in a given language, the speakers of that language think along one track and not along another. (65) Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism which, in its strongest form, states that language imprisons the mind, and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society. Later, this idea became to be known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis(假说), but this term is somewhat inappropriate. Although both Sapir and Whorf emphasized the diversity of languages, Sapir himself never explicitly supported the notion of linguistic determinism.
Have connection with 应为 “与…
解析:be obliged to意为 “缴…”,have since vanished 意为 “从那以后消失了,不复存在了”,since 表示的 “从此以后”之意应体现出来。
解析:strikingly修饰different,指差别很明显,so…that “如此…
解析:being interested in …
解析:come to do sth 表示了过程的转化,因此应译出 “进而”之意。a sort of 表示 “某种”,译作 “类似于…
Never Stop Making Progress
The drawing vividly shows a runner who is arriving at the finishing line which is also the point he has started from. In the drawing, the runner is running around the track of a playground. On both side of the runner, there are two poles and a line between them. On the ground there are two signs which say "ENDING" and "STARTING". (62)
The painter wants to tell us that, just like running, whatever we are doing, we should never stop making progress. The ending point just means a new starting point at which we should set new goals and continue to pursue them. This view is absolutely right in every sense. Firstly, it applies to individuals as in such a competitive world everybody is trying to get ahead. Secondly, corporations and organizations of any kind should also embrace this view, for they act as an independent person in the market and should always look ahead for new openings and possibilities to enhance business. Thirdly, the country on the whole should move forward in terms of politics, economy, and culture so that we Chinese as a nation can gain sustained respect from other peoples.
Examples to prove the view are abundant. The most persuasive are the cases of famous athletes like FuMingxia and Deng Yaping, whose success is gained through non-stop efforts. It goes without saying if they had been content with being just a regional or national champion and stopped practicing, they wouldn't have accomplished so much and become world-famous. By contrast, a lot of people choose to take a rest to enjoy their small success and thus lose the motivation for further achievement. Similarly, plenty of companies are merged by bigger and more powerful ones just because they are overjoyed with their small profits and unaware of the danger posed by more ambitions rivals. In sum, keeping making progress should be the right attitude towards life and work for everybody and even for a country.(327)
