To get the most bang for your travel buck, you must compress your visit into a day or two. This is guerrilla tourism: Make a list of must-see sites, walk fast, eat standing up, and skip time-consuming guided tours. What better way to experiment it by traveling through London in 48 ruthlessly rushed hours.
Sightseeing Day No. 1: Use that jet lag and wake up early. Grab something to eat from the hotel dining room and then head to 10 Downing Street, home of Tony Blair, the prime minister. Farther down, walk past the ornate Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, which is not the name of the clock tower itself but the 13-ton bell inside. Snap a picture, turn around and face the Thames River. Snap that, and then rush across the street to Westminster Abbey, where kings and queens have been married and buried since the 13th century.
Rush up Birdcage Walk to watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, home to British royalty since 1837.
Sightseeing Day No. 2: Pay homage to the Fab Four (the Beatles) by visiting Abbey Road Studios in northwest London.
No visit to London is complete without a look at the Tower of London. It is Europe's oldest palace, fortress and prison. Directly south is the Tower Bridge, which is a little more than 100 years old.
If the weather is clear, the British Airways London Eye is a modern-day Ferris wheel 450 feet above the Thames.
