Hong Kong singer, Andy Lau, has kept his promise to show his fans a Wonderful World through his music. His 2007 China tour concert, with the theme of the Wonderful World, started in Hohhot of northern China this August, and has heated up the city of Beijing with his rhythmic songs and wild dances last Friday.

Starring in over 100 films and h***ing released more than 50 albums, Andy Lau is indeed a versatile performer. He has been Hong Kong's most commercially successful film actor since the 1990s. His enduring popularity in Cantopop arena has also been a legend. On today's show, we will review Andy Lau's path to success and re-visit some of the most memorable tracks from his old albums.

Andy Lau had a difficult childhood in Hong Kong. The place where he grew up was underdeveloped and didn't even h***e running water. The young Andy had to make up to eight trips a day to collect water for his family. Despite financial difficulties, Andy's parents supported him with school education. Upon graduation, Andy Lau entered the TVB academy, where he studied acting and martial arts. After appearing on television for a couple of years, Lau moved onto films with 1982's Boat People.

Like many young entertainers at this time, Andy Lau was trying to diversify his career by recording an album. Though it took quite a while, Andy's first album, I Only Know I Love You, came out in 1985 with a minor buzz. It was not until 1990 when his singing career reached a stellar status with the release of the album, Would It Be Possible? Here you are hearing the title song from this album "Would It Be Possible?".

(Would It Be Possible)

(The Days We Passed Together)

Andy Lau's musical career intertwined with his acting, as he began to record songs for the movies he appeared in. The song you just heard is the theme song of Casino Raiders 2, a gambling movie combined with action scenes in which Andy starred in 1991. The song, The Days We Passed Together, along with the movie, became great hits that year and, has been one of Lau's most celebrated melodies.

(The Days We Passed Together)

The Days We Passed Together was also one of Andy's first hits in Chinese mainland. Along with another song Thank You For Your Love, Lau's baritone voice became influential among more Chinese music lovers.

(Thank You For Your Love)

However, the song which made Andy Lau a household name in Chinese mainland is Forget Love Potion. In the Spring Festival of 1995, Lau brought this song onto the stage of the Spring Festival Gala, one of the country's biggest celebrated events.

(Forget Love Potion)

With a reputation of being diligent, Andy Lau solidified his status as one of Hong Kong's most successful music celebrities, with an extensive list of Cantonese and Mandarin hits to his credit. Andy Lau along with Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai were named the Four Cantopop Kings.

There were times when Lau was so popular that he was working on multiple films as well as recording songs during the same period. His dedication to work finally paid off. In 2000, Lau won the Hong Kong Film Award for his work in Running Out of Time. He also entered into Guinness World Records for "Most Awards Won By A Canto-Pop Male Artist". By April 2000, Andy Lau had won an unprecedented 292 awards for his singing career.

(Stupid Child)

The song you just heard is titled Stupid Child performed by Andy Lau, Jacky Wu, and Ke Shouliang. It tells the story of how an unsophisticated young man struggles his way out in the hurly-burly urban life with strong will and hard work. It seems to reflect the life morals of Andy Lau who has struggled to prove his value with his diligence and dedication.

(Stupid Child)

Since 1992, Lau has released over 40 albums and appeared in concert almost 200 times. Although at a time when the entertainment industry is full of fierce competitions and public attention is attracted now and then by new faces from the younger generation, Andy Lau has managed to maintain his reputation as a renowned and hardworking showbiz entertainer.

(Superman)

To complete our tribute to this legendary Hong Kong singer and actor, we'll share with you the song from Lau's latest album of Miracle World! Woo-hoo! the Superman. And we hope Andy Lau, this superman on the performing stage, will continue to show to music lovers his miracle. This is Zhong Qiu saying bye from Beijing. And catch you at the same time next week.

Han Hong is a versatile female musician who earned her place on the Mando-pop scene through her distinctive vocal and creative talents. She is not only blessed with a great soprano voice, but is also a very successful songwriter. This Sunday, Han Hong will hold her solo concert in Beijing. So on today's China Beat, we will introduce to you this talented singer and musician and revisit some of her classic songs.

(Hometown)

"Hometown" is the song that made thousands of Chinese music lovers familiar with the name of Han Hong. The song comes from her first album, "Rays over the Snowcapped Plateau," released in 1997. Featuring a blend of modern beats and Tibetan tunes, this song expresses the singer's deep affection for her hometown, Xigaze, in Tibet.

(Hometown)

Han Hong says she inherited her voice from her mother, a well-known Tibetan folk singer. After spending a carefree childhood on the beautiful plateau, Han Hong came to Beijing at the age of nine to study singing. But this was just the first step in a long musical journey. In 1985, 14-year-old Han Hong won her first national prize in a singing competition. Later, she was admitted into the renowned Central Conservatory of Music to further improve her vocal skills. You can judge for yourself if it was time well spent with this song, "Himalaya."

(Himalaya)

Han Hong is more than just a singer, though. She is one of the few female singers in China who also writes her own songs. She started composing songs in 1993, and wrote six of the tracks on her first album, "Rays over the Snowcapped Plateau." The song you are now listening to is the title track off the album, "Rays over the Snowcapped Plateau."

(Rays over the Snowcapped Plateau)

Han Hong's singing has distinctive Tibetan characteristics; she's able to shift freely from piercing high notes to soft low tones. Quite a number of Han Hong's songs are related to her roots in Tibet. Her songs combine elements of classical Tibetan folk music with pop music, and h***e thrown a light on the mysterious, rich culture of Tibet. The song you are hearing is called "Tianya," which literally means" the end of the he***en." It is the theme song from director Bao Dejia's film "The Touch," which is performed in the Tibetan language.

(Tian Ya)

Although her music mainly deals with Tibetan themes, as a pop singer in Beijing, Han Hong has drawn on a lot of different musical elements such as jazz, R&B, rock and roll and Latin music. The song we are hearing is one of Han Hong rhythmic songs, "Come on."

(Come On)

No matter how many styles she mixes in her compositions, Han Hong is most at home with folk songs. This next song is called "Qinghai-Tibet Plateau," which Han Hong sings for the land where she grew up.

(Qinghai-Tibet Plateau)

Though she is an energetic singer, Han Hong shows another side of her personality through her music, one of gentle restraint. Han Hong has made a remarkable contribution in helping to modernize and popularize Tibetan songs in China. To complete our tribute to this talented musician, we will now play one more Han Hong hit, "The He***enly Road." This is Zhong Qiu, wishing you a nice week. 'Bye for now.
